Non-Working Firefighting Equipment Cause Tragedy

firefighting equipmentA 4 year old Phoenix girl died tragically this past November due to a non-working fire alarm. Firefighters found an alarm that had been removed and placed inside a closet upside down and sadly this is not an isolated incident. Poor firefighting equipment such as fire alarms that are not properly installed cause endless harm, injuries and deaths each year.

Gina Enders-Stenner, a burn prevention specialist says, "The problem now is that there are more homes with non-working smoke alarms than homes without any alarms at all. There is a very false sense of security."

In 2008 a survey was done that claimed 96% of households have smoke alarms but a whopping 41% of them did not work.

Wildland Firefighting Jobs

wildland firefightingAre wildland firefighting jobs something you dream about? Maybe you have been a volunteer firefighter or a student who is dreaming about their future and firefighting sounds exciting, dangerous and appealing to you. But how do you go about getting a job? You could contact your Forest Service district to see if they are recruiting fire personnel through the state or if they are direct hiring. There is no standardized application procedure from one region to another so hiring can be difficult. Inquiring about temporary jobs will get your 'foot in the door' in many cases and sometimes it is due to timing and good luck. Persistence is key if you want to be a wildland firefighter.

firefighting toolsA problem for many firefighters is when they reach into the pockets of their bunker pants and find that a tool they need is not there because it may have already fallen on the ground.

One firefighter has recognized this problem with firefighting tools and has developed a small tool organizer. Firefighter Ron Kent designed the organizer that fits perfectly in the pocket of your bunker pants and will easily carry dikes, tin nips, wood shims, light sticks a window punch, a power handle or any other tool you wish to carry. You could make one yourself but Ron has gone to the trouble for you and seems to have gotten it right.

Firefighting Gear Shelf Life Of Foam Products

firefighting gear shelf lifeIt depends on what type of foam concentrate you have for firefighting gear shelf life of foam products as typically the it will vary from product to product. Concentrates of a protein type have a shelf life from 7 to 10 years. Concentrates of a synthetic type, which are AFFF, Arc type AFFF, high expansion and "class A" concentrates will have a shelf life of 20 to 25 years.

The Arc concentrates will have a gel like nature and often be mistaken for "old" but it is the polysaccharide in it that gives it this consistency to work on polar solvent/water soluble liquids.
