Non-Working Firefighting Equipment Cause Tragedy

firefighting equipmentA 4 year old Phoenix girl died tragically this past November due to a non-working fire alarm. Firefighters found an alarm that had been removed and placed inside a closet upside down and sadly this is not an isolated incident. Poor firefighting equipment such as fire alarms that are not properly installed cause endless harm, injuries and deaths each year.

Gina Enders-Stenner, a burn prevention specialist says, "The problem now is that there are more homes with non-working smoke alarms than homes without any alarms at all. There is a very false sense of security."

In 2008 a survey was done that claimed 96% of households have smoke alarms but a whopping 41% of them did not work.

Use Of Firefighting Equipment

firefighting equipmentThe use of firefighting equipment such as the fire hose reel and water extinguisher would be for fires involving solid materials such as wood structures or fires involving cloth, paper and plastic.

Other firefighting equipment such as the dry chemical powder extinguisher and the carbon dioxide (co2) extinguisher are for fires involving flammable liquids, chemical and electrical sources.

A water extinguisher, dry chemical powder extinguisher and/or a carbon dioxide extinguisher are recommended items to have in your home and required for office and retail buildings. They should be provided in all areas and they need to be maintained annually by a competent person.

Widely Used Firefighting Equipment Developed By NASA

firefighting equipmentWidely used firefighting equipment and gear is based on NASA technology for firefighters across the United States. The equipment is made with lightweight materials with high tech design and originally developed for the U.S. Space program. One breathable system includes the frame, face mask, harness and an air bottle. The bottle is made with aluminum composite material created by NASA for use in rocket casings. Firefighters wear the breathing aparatus for protection from the smoke and fire related injuries and is the most powerful element for them to use.

Also attributed to NASA technology for firefighters is a inductorless electronic circuit technology that they use for a short range two-way radio that is low cost and rugged. A NASA lightweight mask weighing only 3 ounces and other flexible, heat resistant materials are often used by firefighters in fire and rescue scenerios as well.
