A 4 year old Phoenix girl died tragically this past November due to a non-working fire alarm. Firefighters found an alarm that had been removed and placed inside a closet upside down and sadly this is not an isolated incident. Gina Enders-Stenner, a burn prevention specialist says, "The problem now is that there are more homes with non-working smoke alarms than homes without any alarms at all. There is a very false sense of security."

In 2008 a survey was done that claimed 96% of households have smoke alarms but a whopping 41% of them did not work.
