Firefighters found an alarm that had been removed and placed inside a closet upside down and sadly this is not an isolated incident. Poor firefighting equipment such as fire alarms that are not properly installed cause endless harm, injuries and deaths each year.

Gina Enders-Stenner, a burn prevention specialist says, "The problem now is that there are more homes with non-working smoke alarms than homes without any alarms at all. There is a very false sense of security."

In 2008 a survey was done that claimed 96% of households have smoke alarms but a whopping 41% of them did not work.

Wildland Firefighting Jobs

Are wildland firefighting jobs something you dream about? Maybe you have been a volunteer firefighter or a student who is dreaming about their future and firefighting sounds exciting, dangerous and appealing to you. But how do you go about getting a job? You could contact your Forest Service district to see if they are recruiting fire personnel through the state or if they are direct hiring. There is no standardized application procedure from one region to another so hiring can be difficult. Inquiring about temporary jobs will get your 'foot in the door' in many cases and sometimes it is due to timing and good luck. Persistence is key if you want to be a wildland firefighter.

Wildland Firefighting Tools At Pacforest

If you are a firefighter you want the best tools available. Firefighter Ron Kent designed the organizer that fits perfectly in the pocket of your bunker pants and will easily carry dikes, tin nips, wood shims, light sticks a window punch, a power handle or any other tool you wish to carry. You could make one yourself but Ron has gone to the trouble for you and seems to have gotten it right.

Used Firefighting Gear Goes To Aide Haiti

We have all seen the devastating destruction that has happened to Haiti since the earthquake more than a month ago. Many rescuers and volunteer groups around the globe and especially from the United States have gone to help.

One fire department in Johnstown, West Virginia is pitching in too. When their Fire Chief John Chapman returned from a mission in Haiti he knew immediately what to do after seeing their lack of fire fighting resources. He gathered up their used firefighting gear and is seeking funds right now to ship it all off to Haiti. The $1,200.00 shipping fee is still needed and you can help out by calling 304-624-9382.

What Makes Firefighting Leather Helmets Best?

What makes a firefighter's leather helmet the best? Concentrates of a synthetic type, which are AFFF, Arc type AFFF, high expansion and "class A" concentrates will have a shelf life of 20 to 25 years.

The Arc concentrates will have a gel like nature and often be mistaken for "old" but it is the polysaccharide in it that gives it this consistency to work on polar solvent/water soluble liquids.

Never Used Firefighting Gear Is Patent Pending

Justin Wilkinson, a firefighter from Rosewood Heights Illinois looks forward to his new rescue device that he hopes will be used in all fire departments soon. The never been used firefighting gear is a lightwweight military grade webbed device that he is confident will carry downed firefighters to safety.

"I had this dream that is finally becoming a reality." Justin says. "I'm so excited. I've wanted to do something that does that."

The contraption is made of tubular webbing. It is almost 9 feet long and resembles a long rope with two loops on one end that are offset. So far he has $10,000 invested into it and he hopes they will sell for $30 to $35 dollars each and be more efficient and improved than anything else out there.

Wildland Firefighting Tools On Display Across The Country

There are many Wildland Firefighting tools, equipment, pictures, memorabilia, videos and trucks on display in various museums throughout the country. Among them are the Wildland Firefighter Museum and Smokey Bear Gift Shop in Capitan, New Mexico. Capitan is the birthplace and burial site of world famous Smokey the Bear. In Phoenix you have the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting that features a replica of a lookout cabin and exhibits of smoke jumpers, hotshots, engine crews and Class II crews. There is also the Smokejumper Museum in Missoula, Montana or the Fire Lookout Museum in Spokane, Washington that features a fantastic display of fire lookout technology.

Use Of Firefighting Equipment

The use of firefighting equipment such as the fire hose reel and water extinguisher would be for fires involving solid materials such as wood structures or fires involving cloth, paper and plastic.

Other firefighting equipment such as the dry chemical powder extinguisher and the carbon dioxide (co2) extinguisher are for fires involving flammable liquids, chemical and electrical sources.

A water extinguisher, dry chemical powder extinguisher and/or a carbon dioxide extinguisher are recommended items to have in your home and required for office and retail buildings. Tools such as a fire hose and firemen's gear are on display and are often interactive with the youth. Great fun for young kids to get to use and feel the awesome power of a fire hose. Other events offer skits, athletic tournaments and challenges to combine team building and increase awareness in the communities. Check for a Fireman's Challenge in your area for fun, good causes and to see the firemen at work and play.

Dalmatians: Firefighting and Emt Equipment Representatives

A Dalmatian has served as a firefighting and emt equipment representative for a long time. Mascots today, but the dogs provided a much different and useful service decades ago.

When horse drawn fire carts raced to the scene of a fire, heroic Dalmatians would lead the horses by running in front of them to clear a path and guide them to the fires quickly and safely.

Dalmatians are intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They also proved they are heroes for what they performed for the firefighters years ago. This is why they are still honored in fire houses today.

Home Use Gel Additives For Firefighting and More

Home firefighting systems can be used in protecting your home from damage in the event of a wildfire. To display a favorite firefighting logo on a shirt, jacket or in the form of a tattoo expresses admiration for what you do and rightly so.

Fire stations are divided by their engine unit. The numbers are displayed so they are able to identify who they are within their district. These numbers along with logos are popular as a recognition on shirts and tattoos.

Whether you are honoring a fallen soldier or wearing your own logo and engine unit numbers there is no better way to display them with honor and wear them proudly.

Firefighting Tools For Forcible Entry Situations

There are a number of essential firefighting tools a firefighter will need. For forcible entry situations one of the most important tools to carry is a Haligan Bar, flat headed axe, pick headed axe or multi-purpose screwdriver with removable tips. To gain entry into a door or window, to pry loose floorboards or to create ventilation you will need these tools for critical situations. Some of these tools will be used together to break out glass, find your way out of a building or to break down walls of wood or drywall. These items will be used to remove screws, bolts and other barriers that will block entry. There are of course many other tools but these four are essential tools used in a building fire in emergency situations.

Wildland Firefighting Eye Gear and Goggles

One of the most important protection a firefighter can get is firefighting eye gear and goggles that meat all regulatory standards and more. There they appointed the first firefighters in the United States.

Boston was the first to use the fire engine and the ten-person pump was most widely used for a long time. A leather hose and couplings for joining lengths were introduced shortly thereafter and the fabric and rubber treated hoses were not in use until the 1870's.

An aerial ladder wagon was first produced in the 1870's followed by the hose elevator and then gas engine fire trucks were used as tractors or to pull apparatus. In 1910 it started to come together with one engine to propel the truck and drive the pump.

Today the majority of fire engines are diesel powered with multiple variations existing.

Wildland Firefighting Gear Radios

Communication is essential during a fire emergency. The Black Helmet clothing apparel is everywhere and that couldn't make designer James Love, a firefighter from Orlando, happier.

Inspired by his tatoo, with encouragement he put pen to paper to design the line of clothing for men, women and children that includes a range of shirts, shorts and accessories. Each piece of clothing has a firefighting design such as axes, hoses, flames and helmets. Some of the sayings are; Fight Fire, Adapt and Overcome and Remember the Fallen.

The clothing is cool with meaning. The biggest seller is a long sleeved thermal print with a Maltese Cross and a prayer.

Gloves - Important Firefighting Tools

If asked to name the most important firefighting tools or equipment many would leave gloves off their list. But a firefighters gloves are one of the most essential and fundamental elements to his entire gear. Any old gloves cannot be used in fighting fires no matter how good they are.

A firefighters gloves are rated by the NFDA for fighting structural and wilderness fires. The gloves have a protective moisture barrier and thermal barrier inside to protect the hands from heat, fire and injury. They should be easy to put on and take off for speed and efficiency in a fire event.

Most firefighting gloves today are made of some type of leather often combining two different leathers that make them durable, efficient and effective in repelling steam, hot water, heat and fire.

Safety In Firefighting Gear Ventilation and Equipment Has Reduced Few Deaths

In the last 20 to 30 years firefighting gear ventilation and equipment have come a long way. It is all in the efforts for safety first in protecting the firefighters lives. Progress in the profession of firefighting gear has come in the form of self contained breathing apparatus or SCBA that eliminates the inhalation of smoke and combustion byproducts and thermal protection gear that is first rate. Practically self operating pumpers that pump high volumes of water per minute through greased high tech hoses make firefighting all the more easier. So the loss of life should be greatly decreased since the early 70's but unfortunately this is not the case. Looking at a bar chart from the FEMA web site indicates that deaths from firefighters (with the exception of 2001) has remained relatively the same. It's a mystery that needs to be examined carefully by all firefighters.

Firefighting Leather Helmets - Leather Forever!

The brotherhood of firefighters are proud to wear their firefighting leather helmets. Generation after generation of firefighters have relied upon the leather helmets for added protection and meaningful value. The helmets represent the best of the firefighting teams and individuals who proudly wear them.

The leather helmets of today fit safety standards of the industry and feature both traditional and modern designs. The firefighters uniforms have changed, advanced and developed throughout the ages but the leather helmet has remained steadfast. The equipment is made with lightweight materials with high tech design and originally developed for the U.S. Space program. One breathable system includes the frame, face mask, harness and an air bottle. The bottle is made with aluminum composite material created by NASA for use in rocket casings. Firefighters wear the breathing aparatus for protection from the smoke and fire related injuries and is the most powerful element for them to use.

Also attributed to NASA technology for firefighters is a inductorless electronic circuit technology that they use for a short range two-way radio that is low cost and rugged. A NASA lightweight mask weighing only 3 ounces and other flexible, heat resistant materials are often used by firefighters in fire and rescue scenerios as well.
